简介：

广东人也称为广府人，占了新加坡总人数的15%。新加坡广东人大多数来自于广东省南部地区，如广州、顺德、台山等。

于20世纪前半业，新加坡广府人主要的职业为医生、政治家、文言文老师，也从事其他行业如金饰业、裁缝业、餐饮业等等。他们的商店主要坐落于庙街、宝塔街等。

Introduction:

The Cantonese make up 15% of the Singapore population. The majority of the Cantonese in Singapore come from the southern part of Guangdong Province, such as Guangzhou city, Shunde district, and Taishan.

In the first half of the 20th century, the main professions of Cantonese in Singapore were doctors, politicians, and classical Chinese teachers. They also engaged in other industries such as gold ornaments, tailoring, and catering. These shops are mainly located on Temple Street and Pagoda Street.

早期本地广东方言群女性的工作

红头巾 Samsui women

红头巾是来自广东三水县的广东女工。她们千里迢迢的从中国来到新加坡，于20世纪前半叶在新加坡的工地上从事劳动工作。他们主要在新加坡的建筑工地上充当建筑工人，为新加坡的建设做出了巨大的贡献。

她们所穿的衣服是海军蓝色的衣裳，头上裹着红头巾，其作用是在工作时为了保护头颅，其外表格外鲜明。来自广东四邑地区的女工主要戴的是黑色的头巾。她们大部分在新加坡河畔（Singapore river）和吉宝港口（keppel harbour）的周遭码头从事劳动工作。

The Samsui women mostly comes from Guangdong’s Sanshui to Singapore. They went through a long journey to arrive in Singapore from China in order to work as hard labor, and mostly worked as construction workers on construction sites in Singapore to make a living. They have since made great contributions to the building of Singapore.

They are dressed in navy blue top with a red bandana on their head. The use of the red bandana is to protect the Samsui women’s head from the heat and danger. There are also women coming down from China, Guangdongs’s Sze Yap to Singapore. They usually wear the black bandana instead of red bandana on their head. A huge part of them will be situated along the Singapore River as well as the Keppel harbour to earn a living as a hard labour.

“妈姐” Ma Jie

“妈姐” 是不嫁人的“自梳女” 。她们大多是来自中国广东省顺德区的女佣，总是扎起大松辫、身穿白衣黑裤。新加入“马姐”职业的都要通过自梳仪式。在她们完成仪式后，她们得扎起一条大松辫，终身不嫁，穿白衣黑裤。 自梳仪式是指女性把头发像已婚妇一样自行盘起，以示终生不嫁、独身终老。

"Ma Jie" refers to married women who goes to other peoples' houses to work as a helper/worker to make a living. Most of them came from the Guangdong’s Shunde district to work as a helper. They usually tie their hair into a huge ponytail and wear a white shirt with black long pants.

If there are people who wants to work as a “Majie” they must go through the self-combing ceremony before they can officially be a part of the community. They must vow to not be married for the rest of their life. Thereafter, they must tie their hair into a ponytail and dress in white top with black long pants just like a married woman.
